Prenzlauer Berg is a district in the northeast of Berlin. Unlike most other
districts of Berlin which had been heavily destroyed during the war or demolished
in favour of new buildings in the 1950s and 1960s, Prenzlauer Berg is still rich
in old residential houses. After the political and economical changes in 1989/1990
many of these houses had been reconstructed. Now, the district is one of Berlin's
most beautiful areas.
And one of its most lively areas. Prenzlauer Berg had always been and continues
to be a favourite residential area for young, alternative and creative people.
If you wanna rest from sight-seeing, escape the tourist busses in the city center
and dive into Berlin's real urban life just take the subway U2 to Eberswalder
Straße or Schönhauser Allee and stroll around the streets.
Especially on warm evenings when thousands of people sit outside the countless
cafes, pubs and restaurants (whose prices are usually still moderate). Especially
advisable are the streets between Schönhauser Allee and Prenzlauer Allee
like Stargarder Straße, Pappelallee and Lychener Straße
as well as Husemannstraße and Sredzkistraße.
The Television Tower at Alexanderplatz has a Telecafé in its globe at a height
of 207 metres. It rotates 360° in one hour, so you can overlook entire
Berlin just from your table.
Open 10:00 – 24:00.
Soon after Paris had its first artificial beach along the banks of the Seine river several such beaches and beach bars emerged all over Berlin. Here are some suggestions in case you would like to rest with a German beer or Caribbean cocktail in a canvas chair after a day of sight-seeing or after a long Berlin night.
The ›Capital Beach Bar‹ (right picture) at Ludwig-Erhard-Ufer
with palm trees but without sand is perfectly located in front of the new
Central Station and close to the Reichstag building.
Just a few metres away and across the Spree river you got the ›Bundespressestrand‹,
named after the Bundespresseamt (Federal Information Agency) behind it.
With view of Reichstag and Bundeskanzleramt (German Chancellery).
More locals can be found at the cosy ›Strandbar Mitte‹ at the
Monbijoupark.
With sand, shadowy trees and view of the Bode-Museum on the
Museum Island. In summer daily from 10:00.
If you hang around Potsdamer Platz you can enjoy a drink, cocktail and snack
on the ›Sommerwelt‹ sun deck at the small ›Piano‹
lake in front of the Musical Theater.
They even have a Bedouin tent where you can relax on oriental pillows and with
a water pipe. From June to August daily 10:00 – 22:00.
